• CBD’s role in managing pain, inflammation and anxiety

Posted on February 28, 2019 by in Ailments, Supplements

This blog discusses why CBD oil contains no psychotropic compounds and is safe to use for all age groups. How cannabinoids found in Cannabis flowers are not habit forming and can supplement the bodies naturally produced cannabinoids to relieve joint pain, inflammation and stabilize your psyche.

THC and CBD – the difference

Phyto-Cannabinoids are found in Hemp flowers.

    The two main phytochemical compounds classes are;

    • Cannabinol – THC contained in various hemp varieties has a psychotropic effect and affects the psyche of humans.
    • Cannabidiol – CBD contained in different hemp varieties has ‘no’ psychotropic effect and is made from cannabis strains that are virtually THC-free and at the same time very high in cannabidiol. The phytochemical properties Cannabidiol are anti-inflammatory, analgesic and calming or antipsychotic.

    What are Cannabinoids?

In addition to cannabidiol, hemp extract naturally contains other plant substances from hemp flowers, such as flavonoids or terpenes, as well as more than 100 other substances from the class of cannabinoids. Although cannabinoids can be found in many plants, they are contained in hemp (cannabis), which gives them their name.

Unlike other cannabinoids, such as THC, CBD does not target the same receptors in the human brain. The reason cannabinoids from hemp can attach to brain receptors is because cannabinoids also exist in the human body, not only in the plant kingdom.

    Human Cannabinoid Production

The human body produces cannabinoids naturally to fight inflammation and connect to pain receptors in the brain. CBD oil seeks to activate and assist the body’s natural cannabinoid production. Providing patients with relief from pain and inflammation.

The body’s own cannabinoids are called endocannabinoids or endogenous cannabinoids, cannabinoids produced by the body itself. The receptors that are normally occupied by the cannabinoids or endocannabinoids are also called endocannabinoid system (ECS) in their entirety.

Looking now at the functions of the ECS, it is easy to see why hemp extract has such positive effects. Because the ECS helps to regulate sleep, the immune system and pain perception. When it is activated by the CBD oil, pain subsides, sleep improves, and the immune system stops reacting, as is often the case with inflammation.

In comparison with THC where a “high” is created when ingested, because the cannabinol binds to the cannabinoid receptors in the brain, thereby activating the reward system in the brain, whereupon it emits substances (such as dopamine), CBD works completely differently.

    How CBD relieves pain

Several explanations of the mode of action of CBD currently exist. It is said that it binds to one of the endocannabinoid receptors, the so-called CB2 receptor, which plays a crucial role in the immune system because it can cause or inhibit pain and inflammatory reactions.

According to a study published in Neurotherapeutic CBD oil is also said to activate the formation of endogenous (ie endogenous) cannabinoids in the body, which in turn occupy the CB2 receptors.

In addition, CBD prevent the body from degrading so-called anandamides. These are substances that are involved in the regulation of pain. High anandamide levels in the blood can relieve pain, which analysts say would explain the painkilling effect of hemp extract oil.

    Hemp extract for joint pain

Chronic arthritis is one of the most common causes of disability in western countries. They affect more than 50 million people in the US alone. There is a distinction between arthritis and osteoarthritis.

While rheumatoid arthritis is one of the autoimmune diseases, as the immune system attacks the joints here – usually in the hands and feet – and thus leads to inflammation, osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease (“wear and tear”), predominantly at the hip, knee and thumb joints. Both forms cause feelings of stiffness as well as swollen and inflamed joints and thus also massive pain.

Various studies have shown that CBD in hemp extract will assist in the treatment of inflammatory joint disease and relieve inflammatory pain:

CBD oil combats inflammation and pain – Clinical Case Studies

CBD oil is not yet used in conventional medicine. However, the studies sound promising, so that those affected could dare to try in any case – especially because of the few side effects of hemp extract oil.

In 2011, a study found that CBD can fight inflammatory pain because it appears to directly affect the pain receptors.

In 2014, a review was published in which it was stated that CBD could be an effective treatment for osteoarthritis, as the cannabinoid receptors are present at the relevant sites and are involved not only in the regulation of pain and inflammation, but also directly to the joint functions.

Two years later, a study showed that CBD – applied externally to the aching skin in the form of a gel – has the potential to reduce the pain and inflammation associated with arthritis. In one experiment, the gel significantly reduced joint swelling, morbid thickening of the synovium and its infiltration with immune cells (immigration of immune cells from the blood into the synovial membrane, indicating the autoimmune process typical of arthritis).

In 2017, another study found that CBD was a safe and useful way to treat joint pain caused by joint inflammation. In addition to a pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory effect, CBD also showed neuroprotective properties in this study. The nerve damage usually associated with joint disease sooner or later, and the consequent chronic neuropathic pain could be prevented.

THC-containing oral spray also relieves nerve pain

In 2006 a study was published in which it was discovered that oral spray (trade name Sativex) was able to relieve arthritis pain well. However, the spray is made from THC-containing hemp, so you have to wonder if it was actually the CBD that had stopped the pain, or rather the THC or both

The mouth spray is now legally available (but only on prescription, because it falls under the narcotic law) and is used primarily in spastic paralysis of multiple sclerosis, but also in neuropathic pain (nerve pain).

    CBD oil in multiple sclerosis

Hemp extracts have been used traditionally for thousands of years for the treatment of various types of pain, but only recently researched by conventional medicine – not only for their use in arthritis, but also in multiple sclerosis – an autoimmune disease that affects the entire body, the disease can damage nerves and brain. It also causes muscle cramps, a common symptom of MS. These cramps can become so severe that they cause chronic pain in those affected – and this is exactly where CBD oil can be used.

CBD oil relieves side effects with chemo

The National Academies of Science’s The Health Effects of Cannabis and Cannabinoids (published in January 2017) confirmed, after reviewing many systematic reviews from dozens of studies and studies, that hemp extract or CBD oil could help with spasticity and chronic Pain represents a very good treatment option. The authors summarize that oral CBD is helpful:

    • for adults who suffer from nausea and vomiting due to chemotherapy. The cannabinoids act here as an antiemetic.
    • in chronic pain, as people treated with cannabinoids are more likely to experience clinically significant relief of their pain.
    • in multiple sclerosis and related spastic complaints, as experience has shown that these are reduced by the short-term use of cannabinoids.

No habitual effects on CBD oil

CBD oil has a real potential in terms of pain relief and can therefore be tried in many diseases that are associated with chronic pain. The pain may not be completely contained, but at least the CBD oil can help reduce the dose of the usual painkillers, which alone would be an advantage, because unlike these, the CBD oil does not have serious side effects.

Furthermore, a study in the Journal of Experimental Medicine showed that CBD oil does not appear to have any habitual effects. With conventional painkillers, it is well known that some patients need to increase the dose over and over in order to have an effect. This is not the case with CBD oil and hemp extracts.

    CBD stabilizes the psyche

As explained above, it has long been assumed that CBD – since it did not make high – does not affect the psyche of man. However, this is doubted in the meantime, since hemp extract oil can also have very positive effects on the psyche of some people. In contrast to THC, however, it does not lead to a kind of intoxication, but has a pleasant calming and stabilizing effect in nervous or anxious states.

In a 2012 study, the researchers wrote that cannabidiol was capable of antipsychotic activity. This means that it can block psychotic symptoms, eg. delusions, hallucinations, restlessness, etc. In the study mentioned, this effect was demonstrated by the fact that CBD was able to prevent those psychotic conditions that normally appear after taking high doses of THC.

Also in connection with schizophrenia it has shown positive effects. Because it is known that the cannabinoid receptors and their activity are involved in forgetting bad experiences. Cannabidiol is also recommended for anxiety disorders or other traumatic disorders.

    Application of CBD

Hemp extract oil or CBD oil can be applied directly to aching joints.

However, hemp extract oil can also be taken internally – taking into account the recommended application / dosage of the manufacturer. twice daily (morning and evening) given 1-3 drops undiluted under the tongue for 60 seconds before swallowing.

It is best to use the appropriate dose slowly. Start with a few drops a day and increase the dose to the recommended level or slightly above it until you feel an effect.

    Side Effects of CBD Oil

CBD oil is well tolerated by most users. Only a few experience mild side effects, such as fatigue, nausea, diarrhea or nervousness. Also changes in appetite (more or less than before) occur in a few cases – such a review was published in the 2017 Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research .

If the CBD oil is used together with medicines, then cannabinoids may increase or decrease the drug’s effect. Therefore, the integration of the hemp extract oil in the therapy should be done slowly.

The long-term effects of cannabinoids on e.g. the hormone system are not yet explored. In any case, the dosage should be adjusted careful.

When used externally, the oil should be tested in advance on a small area of skin to see if there may be an allergic reaction.

Hemp extract for pain always together with other measures

In chronic pain disorders, of course, the pain relief should not be the only focus, but the causative problem. Therefore, although you can use the hemp extract in chronic pain, it is best used together with holistic measures that help to support the entire body in the fight against the disease.
